You know, nothing says "Halloween" like a story about Christmas. This is the opening chapter of "A My-Life Christmas," published in the Revere High School Lantern on November 17, 1993. In May of 1994, this comic strip (or rather, the whole storyline) won the Lantern's "highly coveted" Best Comic of the 1993-1994 Year Award. I think I won by default or something.
I have always liked Christmastime, so I was tickled pink when I finally got the idea for a Christmas storyline for My-Life. This was during My-Life's second year in the Lantern, so it was right smack dab in the middle of the strip's published run. I could have done a Christmas storyline during the first year, but I was already in the middle of another storyline and didn't want to interrupt it again (long story, which I'll tell eventually)....also, I wanted to wait until both the strip and the characters were somewhat established before doing a "Holiday edition."
I'm not going to say anything regarding the storyline just yet for those of you who couldn't figure out what was going on (I don't want to ruin the "surprise"), so I'll note some things I've just noticed as I ran this puppy through the scanner: Adam's scarf mysteriously disappears in the middle of the strip; Greg's holding a Stimpy doll in the first panel; In the third panel, there are some silhouettes of toys behind Greg, including what looks like action figures of Adam and Batman (another My-Life character toy turns up later in the storyline).
I kind of liked the facial expressions in this one (but my all-time favorite is coming up next week), especially that weird look on Greg in the third panel.
Something you don't get to see: I wrote the My-Life title above this strip because back then, the Lantern didn't have a template for their comic page (a smart young whipper-snapper named Me had to design one for them), so that means the comic strip artists had to write in the title and byline themselves (and we should all know by now what a "byline" is, RIGHT...?). Anyway, next to the words "My-Life" I wrote (in parentheses) "Now in Living Black and White." Aren't I a DEH-vil??!!
Return to The My-Life Vault....NOW!
