The Wacky Worm (1941) (NEW TO DISC!)

So far, early reviews have been glowing, with really only one significant concern. It is being reported in a number of reviews that the audio mix for The Eager Beaver is slightly out of sync, with the problem being most apparent during a gag in which the beavers' tree-chopping is set to music. It's a problem stemming from the remastering that was done to the short for HBO Max. This may spoil some fans' enjoyment of the cartoon, so be aware.

Despite this, we are still fully recommending this title. This disc contains a lot of upgrades and fills in a lot of essential 1940s gaps, not to mention offering the long-awaited home video debuts of a key later Road Runner film and one of Chuck Jones's more experimental Bugs shorts.

We can now safely report that the Collector's Choice series will continue to a third volume, but nevertheless if you do want to keep seeing more releases past that, like always, vote with your wallet. Show Warner Archive that you want to support this series and see it continue.

The Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debuts of Moonlight for Two and I Wish I Had Wings

Tarzan the Ape Man Cover Okay, we're really serious this time. We've had our fun, but we get it, it's annoying. Enough is enough. Because now it's really totally the day everyone has been waiting for! Finally, after months of waiting, Warner Archive has finally released the 1932 Tarzan the Ape Man on Blu-ray! The first in the beloved, long-running series starring Johnny Weissmuller in the title role (and NOT the repulsive 1981 remake with Bo Derek and Miles O'Keeffe), the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's special features are two 1930s Merrie Melodies making their debuts remastered and their debuts in HD: Moonlight for Two and I Wish I Had Wings.

Both are versions prepared for HBO Max, and although Moonlight for Two seems to have gotten out relatively unscathed, the version of I Wish I Had Wings on Max has a serious problem. All of the spoken dialogue in the cartoon has been removed, a situation that doesn't become apparent until about the short's three-minute mark. There have been no reviews released anywhere for the Blu-ray, so it is not known if this error has been fixed (and it's doubtful). Do NOT buy this disc if you were only hoping to own I Wish I Had Wings.

The Tarzan the Ape Man Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Gentleman Jim Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debut of Foney Fables and home video debut of Hobby Horse-Laffs

Gentleman Jim Cover Okay, no joke this time, because now it's really the day everyone has been waiting for! Finally, after months of waiting, Warner Archive has finally released the 1942 biopic Gentleman Jim on Blu-ray! Directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Errol Flynn as boxing champ James Corbett, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's extras are three Warner Bros. cartoons, all in hi-def: the Chuck Jones classic The Dover Boys at Pimento University, Foney Fables, and the home video debut of Norm McCabe's black-and-white Hobby Horse-Laffs. Of course, The Dover Boys was previously on the first Platinum Collection Blu-ray, but the other two are making their HD debuts on this release.

However, the HD version of Hobby Horse-Laffs was prepared for HBO Max, and there is some Photoshopping done to the title card. It's not as offensive-looking as on some of the other tinkered-with shorts (looking right at you, Toy Town Hall), but it still might be a dealbreaker for those wanting to add this one to their collection. You've been warned.

The Gentleman Jim Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $22.48. Order it now on Amazon.

The Great Ziegfeld Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debut of Toy Town Hall

Great Ziegfeld Cover Seriously now, it's the day everyone has really been waiting for! Finally, also after months of waiting, Warner Archive has issued on Blu-ray the Oscar-winning biopic The Great Ziegfeld starring William Powell! With a 4K scan of the film's entire "roadshow" version (overture, intermission, etc.), the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's special features is the HD debut of the Merrie Melody Toy Town Hall, which had only previously been released as an unremastered extra on past Warner feature DVDs. Unfortunately, this remastered HD version was prepared overseas for HBO Max, and the film's entire opening sequence right up through the short's title card has been altered. Photoshopping, digital artifacts, freeze framing, and a poorly recreated crossfade all litter the title sequence.

Do NOT buy this Blu-ray just for this cartoon. Just wait until it can get fixed for a future Collector's Choice volume or just track down one of the older DVDs with the short unremastered but complete.

BUT, if you still want the movie, The Great Ziegfeld on Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $22.48. Order it now on Amazon.

December 12, 2023

Anna Christie Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debut of The Booze Hangs High

Anna Christie Cover It's the day everyone has been waiting for! Finally, after months of waiting, Warner Archive has finally released the 1930 adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie on Blu-ray! Starring screen legend Greta Garbo--and this was where the famous "GARBO TALKS!" tagline came from--the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

In addition to a new 4K scan, the Blu-ray has a good dose of special features, including the concurrently shot German version of the movie that also starred Garbo. For cartoon fans, the disc also includes Bosko in 1930's The Booze Hangs High. This is the same master prepared for the Golden Collection Volume Six DVD, now finally making its hi-def debut.

The Anna Christie Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $22.48. Order it now on Amazon.

Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Includes HD debuts of Moonlight for Two and I Wish I Had Wings

Tarzan the Ape Man Cover "I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized..."

It's been a long time coming, but the last of Warner Archive's announced December titles has finally become available for pre-order. This final holdout was 1932's Tarzan the Ape Man, the historic first entry in the long-running film series starring Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller in the title role. Boasting a brand new 4K scan, the Blu-ray is set for release on December 12 and is now finally available to pre-order at all of the usual online stores such as Amazon.

(And just to be clear, this is not the universally despised 1981 remake of the same name with Bo Derek and Miles O'Keeffe.)

Among the disc's announced special features are two 1930s Merrie Melodies making their debuts remastered and their debuts in HD: Moonlight for Two and I Wish I Had Wings. Both of these shorts were remastered for HBO Max (at press time, both are currently still on the Max service), with Moonlight for Two only previously appearing as an unremastered extra on the TCM Archives: Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume Three DVD set back in 2009. The new version looks pretty good, with no apparent tinkering or Photoshopping or screwing around.

BUT!

I Wish I Had Wings is a whole different story. The title card does give the impression that it has had some visual information added to the edges, but ironically that's not its biggest problem. All of the spoken dialogue in the cartoon has been removed, a situation that doesn't become apparent until about the short's three-minute mark.

The consensus seems to be that the source for the audio was a broadcast master Turner Entertainment had used for international distribution, mixing out any English dialogue but leaving in the music and sound effects. This is not unlike the error that occurred on the Golden Collection Volume Six when an international audio mix was used for the bonus cartoon Hop and Go. And sure enough, at least one other "remastered" cartoon that had appeared on HBO Max (Odor of the Day) featured the same type of dialogue-free audio mix (well, the sneezing was muted!).

If you're looking to get the Blu-ray just for this cartoon, obviously we wouldn't advise it until some actual reviews turn up. It could very well be that the actual digital master is fine and that HBO Max just programmed the wrong audio channel or something, but we certainly wouldn't want anyone to make plans just based on that speculation. So unless you're a diehard Tarzan fan or you really just want Moonlight for Two, you might want to stay away.

In any event, the Tarzan the Ape Man Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on December 12 and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Warner Archive December Blu-rays Now Available for Pre-Order

Many bonus cartoons, including the home video debut of Hobby Horse-Laffs

Anna Christie Cover

Great Ziegfeld Cover

Gentleman Jim Cover

It's been three weeks since Warner Archive first announced their December slate of Blu-ray releases, and for whatever reason it's taken this long for pre-order links to finally start showing up. The label is continuing to use classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons as special-feature fodder, and three of the announced titles with cartoons are now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon, and a retail price of $21.99 has also been revealed for each title. The Blu-rays are all set for release on December 12.

First up is the landmark 1930 adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie. Starring the one and only Greta Garbo in the title role, this is the film that was famously marketed with the "GARBO TALKS!" tagline. Boasting a new 4K scan, the Blu-ray offers a surprising amount of special features, perhaps most amazing of which is the concurrently shot German version also starring Garbo. And despite being an MGM release, the disc also contains a Warner Bros. cartoon, Bosko in 1930's The Booze Hangs High ("Ai-yi! Ai-yi!"). Previously only available (officially) on the Golden Collection Volume Six DVD, that remastered version is finally making its hi-def debut on this Blu-ray.

Up next is MGM's Best Picture Oscar winner of 1936, The Great Ziegfeld, a very romanticized musical biopic with William Powell starring as the famed Ziegfeld Follies creator Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. Very high on spectacle, it has a weird cross-section of famous actors playing themselves (Ray Bolger, Fannie Brice) and actors playing real contemporary personalities (Myrna Loy as Billie Burke, Buddy Doyle as Eddie Cantor). With a 4K scan of the film's entire "roadshow" version (overture, intermission, etc.), the Blu-ray includes among its bonuses the HD debut of the Merrie Melody Toy Town Hall. Previously only seen unremastered as an extra on a number of Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers DVDs, the cartoon is also making its remastered debut on this disc.

BUT!

The version of Toy Town Hall being used here comes straight from HBO Max, and it is unfortunately yet another of the titles that were mangled by the infamous "Photoshopping" that had been done to numerous classic cartoons when they first started showing up on the streaming service. In this case, the entire opening sequence leading up to the title card has been fooled around with: extra bullseye rings, a weird blocky black void where the WB shield comes from, and a harsh crossfade to a freeze frame of the short's title card (originally the title and credits appear over the bullseye rings before the radio backdrop appears). You have been warned!

Finally, it's an actual Warner Bros. movie being released by Warner Archive, the 1942 biopic Gentleman Jim directed by Raoul Walsh. Starring Errol Flynn as legendary boxing champion James Corbett, this Blu-ray is also featuring a 4K scan of the original nitrate camera negative. A little lighter on extras (mainly the trailer and audio broadcasts), the disc offers three Warner Bros. cartoons in HD: the Chuck Jones classic The Dover Boys at Pimento University, the hi-def debut of Foney Fables, and the home video debut of Norm McCabe's quirky one-shot Hobby Horse-Laffs. The Dover Boys was previously on the first Platinum Collection Blu-ray and Fables had already been remastered for the Golden Collection Volume Five.

BUT!

Like with Toy Town Hall, Hobby Horse-Laffs is also from an HBO Max remaster. It's not as glaring as on the former, but there is definitely Photoshopping done to the cartoon, most notably on the title card. Considering how obscure and how rarely seen it is nowadays, some collectors may feel it's worth it in order to obtain the short, but again, you've been warned.

(One further Warner Archive release, Tarzan the Ape Man, will also have two HD cartoons on it--I Wish I Had Wings and Moonlight for Two--but at press time the Blu-ray is not up for pre-order yet.)

With both Collector's Choice Vol. 2 and this selection of movies coming out all at once, December will be a pretty big month for those who collect the shorts in HD. Sadly, the HBO Max messing-around may sour some of it for some, and of course who's to say that some of these won't be fixed on a future Collector's Choice volume?

The Anna Christie Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on December 12 and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

The Great Ziegfeld is also scheduled to be released on Blu-ray on December 12 and will also retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Finally, the Gentleman Jim Blu-ray is also scheduled to be released on December 12 and will also retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 Warner Archive Blu-ray DATE AND PRICE CHANGE

Now Available December 12!

Collector's Choice 2 Cover It's unfortunately not the news that everyone was hoping for, as today on the Extras podcast George Feltenstein confirmed that Warner Archive is indeed delaying the release of its upcoming Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 Blu-ray. Fear not, the disc is still coming, but with a new street date of December 12.

Also, Amazon and a number of other retailers are advertising a new, higher suggested retail price for the collection, bumping it up by four dollars to $25.99. Unlike the release date, the new price wasn't addressed on the podcast.

Explaining the delay to not only Collector's Choice but also a number of other Archive titles this fall, Feltenstein stressed that it has nothing to do with confidence in a title or consumer interest. On the contrary, it is because the number of pressing plants dedicated to home media is so low that they are simply becoming overworked (Feltenstein in fact stated he's only aware of one U.S. plant handling discs). In addition to Warner Archive, there is also continued production from other boutique labels such as Shout! Factory, Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, and more, what George referred to as a "production clogline." The trade off is, yes, a title or two may get delayed, but then the Archive can ensure that such a title won't be rushed through production and allow an error to slip by.

Regarding the future of Looney Tunes, Feltenstein did re-confirm that Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 3 is in production as we speak, and he was planning to review film elements for a number of shorts in the coming days. He also teased that more cartoon titles are in the works.

He said the folks at the Archive "plan to expand our animation activities in 2024, read into that what you may."

The Blu-ray will contain the following cartoons, listed for now in alphabetical order....

Behind the Meat-Ball (1945) (NEW TO DISC!)

Directed by horror legend Tod Browning, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's special features are two 1930s Looney Tunes making their debuts in HD: Milk and Money starring Porky and The Phantom Ship with Beans and Ham and Ex. Though Milk and Money had previously appeared on DVD on the Golden Collection Volume Five, this Blu-ray marks the home video debut of The Phantom Ship. For those keeping track, this leaves only two final Ham and Ex cartoons left to be remastered and released on home video.

Christopher Strong Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debut of Buddy's Beer Garden

Christopher Strong Cover As we inch closer and closer to the November release of Warner Archive's Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2, one major benchmark is here with today's release of most of the label's October titles. One such highlight is the HD debut of the racy, 1933 pre-Code drama Christopher Strong, featuring Katharine Hepburn in her first starring role. Originally scheduled for release on September 26 before being bumped to October, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's special features is the very early Looney Tune Buddy's Beer Garden starring...well, Bosko's successor. Originally remastered for the Golden Collection Volume Six DVD set, the cartoon is making its hi-def debut on the disc.

The Christopher Strong Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Dance Fools Dance Cover And the news of Warner Archive's October releases continues, as now also available for pre-order is MGM's 1931 pre-code sorta-crime drama Dance, Fools, Dance. Marking the first pairing of screen legends Joan Crawford and Clark Gable, the Blu-ray is set for release on October 31 and is now available to pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon.

Among the disc's announced special features are two 1930s Merrie Melodies making their debuts in HD: One More Time and the iconic Smile, Darn Ya, Smile! Both starring Foxy and both being semi-regular staples on old public-domain VHS releases, both of these cartoons have previously appeared (officially) on DVD on the Golden Collection Volume Six.

The Dance, Fools, Dance Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on October 31 and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

The Devil Doll (1936) Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Including the home video debut of The Phantom Ship

Devil Doll Cover With all of the attention focused on Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2, some of Warner Archive's other recent announcements have almost gotten lost in the shuffle, but there will be some tidbits for cartoon fans coming in the label's October releases, which are now being made available for pre-order. Just in time for Halloween comes the Blu-ray debut of 1936's creepy sci-fi flick The Devil Doll starring Lionel Barrymore and Maureen O'Sullivan and directed by Tod Browning (Dracula, Freaks, London After Midnight). Boasting a brand new 4K scan of preserved archive elements, the Blu-ray is set for release on October 24 and is now available to pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon.

(And just to make it clear, this is not the 1964 British film with the ventriloquist dummy, as seen on Mystery Science Theater 3000.)

Despite the movie originally being an MGM release, among the disc's announced special features are two 1930s Looney Tunes making their debuts in HD: Milk and Money starring Porky and The Phantom Ship with Beans and Ham and Ex. Though Milk and Money had previously appeared on DVD on the Golden Collection Volume Five, this Blu-ray marks the home video debut of The Phantom Ship, finally filling a hole for collectors of the black and white shorts.

The Devil Doll Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on October 24 and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

The Wacky Worm (1941) (NEW TO DISC!)

Like with the first volume, sixteen of the cartoons on this collection are brand new to modern optical disc formats, having only previously been released on either VHS or laserdisc. OR, in the case of Hare-Breadth Hurry and Lickety-Splat, we're getting two cartoons that have never been released on home video before in the United States! The remaining cartoons here have only previously been released unremastered as extras on past Warner Home Video DVDs.

Unlike the first volume, though, there is more of an even split this time between shorts with the star characters and random one-shots. Clearly there is an effort to continue the work from the last disc to present more titles from the peak era of the 1940s. Almost all of the major directors are given a chance to shine, with a particular focus on the many Chuck Jones color one-shots left unreleased.

Of the twenty-five cartoons on this set, twenty-four are brand new to the format, with the only repeat being A Hound for Trouble. Hound was last seen on Blu-ray as an extra on the Archive's 2021 release of On Moonlight Bay, where the HBO Max version was used with a hideously Photoshopped title sequence. We have to assume that its inclusion here means the cartoon has now been fixed.

This same assumption is probably also true for One Meat Brawl, which appeared remastered back in 2012 on the Porky & Friends: Hilarious Ham DVD from the Looney Tunes Super Stars series. However, for whatever reason, at the time Warner Home Video used a Turner Entertainment broadcast master as its source, complete with the tacked-on "DUBBED VERSION" copyright notice that viewers of Cartoon Network and Boomerang have come to know and "love." We have to believe that the cartoon has been newly remastered for this release, this time from the actual negative. For these arguable double-dips, we're all for it and we hope more corrections appear on future volumes.

(As for Rabbit Rampage, there had always been some debate as to whether the version that appeared as a bonus on the Golden Collection Volume Six was remastered or not. We always gave fans the benefit of the doubt and usually accepted it as such, but with its inclusion here we can now at least positively say that a guaranteed remastered HD version will now be available on home video.)

The disc's official synopsis, as posted by Warner Archive retail partner Movie Zyng, reads as follows....

There is no dispute. The Warner Bros. Cartoons are the funniest animated shorts in all of film history, and its classic cartoon stars - Bugs Bunny, Tweety and Sylvester, Porky Pig, The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, to name but a few - are the most popular of all time. This second collection of rarely seen gems - all presented here for the first time on Blu-ray - features twenty-five more titles that have been most requested by collectors and connoisseurs. Bugs Bunny takes over in place of the Road-Runner; Porky Pig scours the woods for Grover Ground Hog; Charley [sic] Dog seeks his next owner in Mother Italy. "Attsamattah for you?" Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 is the first, last and only choice for laughs - 24 frames per second!

Well, let's hope it's not the "last"!

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 is scheduled to be released on November 28 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. A link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 Warner Archive Blu-ray Announced

Release date of November 28

Collector's Choice 2 Cover It's the news that fans and collectors have waited three months for, as today Warner Archive announced on their Facebook page the follow-up to their enormously successful Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 Blu-ray. Although response to the first volume made everyone optimistic for a sequel, the label's confirmation today that the series will continue no doubt brought a sigh of relief to many. Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 will see release on Blu-ray on November 28.

At press time, there is no content list available, though the announcement promised twenty-five cartoons, five more than on the previous compilation. The cover art featured a mix of Looney Tunes stars similar to that on the first volume, with Elmer now appearing instead of the Goofy Gophers and the Three Bears.

Also, there is no word yet if a DVD edition will be made available.

As if news of the second volume wasn't enough, George Feltenstein also appeared on the Extras podcast today to tease even more news: a volume three is also in the works!

Once again, this looks like a title we will be wholeheartedly recommending, as the selections that were made for volume one filled a lot of major gaps in fans' collections. Hopefully it won't be long before cartoon titles get revealed.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2 is scheduled to be released on November 28 on Blu-ray only, and a price and link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as they become available.

Featuring the one and only Katharine Hepburn in her first starring role, the Blu-ray is now available for pre-order, while a retail price of $21.99 has also been revealed.

Among the disc's announced special features is the very early Looney Tune Buddy's Beer Garden starring...well, you know. Originally remastered for the Golden Collection Volume Six DVD set, the cartoon will be making its hi-def debut on the disc.

Gay Purr-ee Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes HD debuts of French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back to Me!

Gay Purr-ee Cover It's the final Warner Archive release day of the summer, and it's a big one! Among today's releases is the hi-def debut of the UPA-animated musical Gay Purr-ee. Directed by Warner animator Abe Levitow and starring the voices of Judy Garland and Robert Goulet, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

With a screenplay co-written by Chuck Jones, this was the project that cost Jones his job at Warner Bros. Done more or less as a favor for his protégé Levitow, Jones believed that since the film was being produced by UPA that Warner wouldn't become aware that he was moonlighting to work on it. Tragically, Warner Bros. would acquire the distribution rights to the movie and, upon discovering whose name was attached to it, would unceremoniously fire Jones.

So already the Blu-ray has a very strong connection to the Warner cartoon studio, but to sweeten the pot further, among its extras are three classic cartoons: the Oscar-winning For Scent-imental Reasons and the HD debuts of both French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back to Me!

The Gay Purr-ee Blu-ray is now available online and retails for $22.49. Order it now on Amazon.

Cats Don't Dance Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Includes four classic cartoons as HD extras

Cats Cover Following the by-now usual timeline of announcements and pre-orders, Warner Archive's September Blu-ray titles are now becoming available for pre-order. This includes the underrated 1997 animated musical Cats Don't Dance, which is now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon, while a retail price of $21.99 has also been revealed. Featuring the talents of actor Scott Bakula, musician Randy Newman, and none other than Gene Kelly as choreographer, the Blu-ray is still set for release on September 26.

Among the disc's announced special features are four classic song-and-dance cartoons: Curtain Razor, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Show Biz Bugs, and What's Up Doc? All four cartoons have been released on various Blu-rays in the past, such as the Bugs cartoons on the Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection and the other two as bonuses on other Archive releases.

The Cats Don't Dance Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on September 26 and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Classic Bugs, Daffy, and Even Buddy Cartoons Featured on Warner Archive September Blu-rays

Including the HD debut of Buddy's Beer Garden

Cats Cover

Christopher Strong Cover

Yesterday Warner Archive announced their September slate of Blu-ray titles, and it has proven to be one of the most diverse selections the label has ever offered. The announced group includes such intriguing selections as a 1930s romantic comedy with Clark Gable, a 1950s western, and even a 1990s thriller starring Woody Harrelson! All six Blu-rays are due to come out on September 26.

For completists of the Looney Tunes cartoons in high definition, two particular titles will be of interest. First up is the 1933 romantic drama Christopher Strong, which is chock-full of controversial pre-Code elements like infidelity, unwed mothers, and suicide--but it's probably more historic for having Katharine Hepburn's first starring role. (It's such an obscure title that its only other disc release has been its 2009 DVD-R through the Archive, complete with its archaic old-school Warner Archive cover art of a publicity still against a generic blue background.) In addition to boasting a brand new 4K scan from the original nitrate negative, the disc will include three shorts all debuting in HD, including the very early Looney Tune Buddy's Beer Garden starring you-know-who!

Jumping forward six decades is another choice title, the HD debut of the underrated animated musical Cats Don't Dance! Starring Scott Bakula as a Midwest-born dancing tabby with dreams of Hollywood, the movie features songs by Randy Newman and choreography by none other than Gene Kelly--although a lot of Warner Bros. cartoon fans also know it as the movie that was theatrically paired with the Chuck Jones-produced Foghorn Leghorn short Pullet Surprise. Though Pullet Surprise will not be on this Blu-ray, the disc however will feature four classic cartoons: Curtain Razor with Porky Pig, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Show Biz Bugs, and What's Up Doc? All four cartoons have been released on various Blu-rays in the past, such as the Bugs cartoons on the Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection and the others as bonuses on other Archive releases.

The Cats Don't Dance and Christopher Strong Blu-rays are both scheduled to be released on September 26, and official prices and links to pre-order them on Amazon will be posted here as soon as they appear.

Little Women (1933) Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Includes I Like Mountain Music and the remastered, HD debut of The Organ Grinder

Little Women Cover The news of Warner Archive's August titles coming up for pre-order continues, as the latest release to finally be up is the Oscar-winning 1933 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, starring Katharine Hepburn and directed by George Cukor. Now being noted with a a retail price of $22.49, the Blu-ray is still set for release on August 29 and is now available for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon.

Among the disc's announced special features are two early Merrie Melodies cartoons in high definition, a double-dip of I Like Mountain Music and the remastered debut of The Organ Grinder. I Like Mountain Music has some Photoshopping going on during the opening titles typical of a lot of the cartoons originally remastered for HBO Max, while The Organ Grinder appears to be relatively unscathed.

The Little Women Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on August 29 and will retail for $22.49. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Gay Purr-ee Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Includes HD debuts of French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back to Me!

Gay Purr-ee Cover With less than a month to go before their release, Warner Archive's August Blu-ray titles are now finally popping up for pre-order. One highlight in this month's slate is the UPA-animated musical Gay Purr-ee, which is now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon, while a retail price of $22.49 has also been revealed. Directed by Warner animator Abe Levitow and starring the voices of Judy Garland and Robert Goulet, the Blu-ray is still set for release on August 29.

In addition to the movie's historic notoriety as the film that resulted in Chuck Jones's firing at Warner Bros., the disc includes three classic Warner cartoons as bonuses: the Oscar-winning For Scent-imental Reasons and the HD debuts of both French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back to Me!

The Gay Purr-ee Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on August 29 and will retail for $22.49. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Cimarron (1931) Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes the remastered, HD debuts of Red-Headed Baby and Lady, Play Your Mandolin!

Cimarron Cover And the incredible Warner Archive summer continues with the release of the label's July Blu-ray titles. One such HD debut now shipping is RKO's Oscar-winning 1931 western Cimarron starring Richard Dix. Based on Edna Ferber's epic novel, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

The disc's three special features are all short subjects: the MGM short The Devil's Cabaret and two very early Merrie Melodies, Red-Headed Baby and the historic, once-pretty-rare Lady, Play Your Mandolin! The marks the first disc appearance of the original black and white version of Red and the remastered debut of Lady. Both cartoons are in HD.

Cimarron is now available online on Blu-ray only and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Land of the Pharaohs Warner Archive Blu-ray Will NOT Contain Sahara Hare

HD debut of Bugs Bunny classic scrapped

Land of the Pharaohs Cover Review copies of Warner Archive's upcoming Blu-ray release of the Howard Hawks epic Land of the Pharaohs are now circulating, and unfortunately there's something important missing from the disc. Despite being part of the announced special features, and despite still being listed on the Blu-ray case's back cover, it is being reported from a number of review sites that the disc will no longer contain the classic Bugs Bunny cartoon Sahara Hare.

There has been no word from Warner Archive about the omission. The cartoon was scheduled to make its debut in high definition on this release. All of the other planned content is still present on the disc.

The Blu-ray itself had already been delayed from its original June 27 release date to the new date of July 18. There was no reported reason given for the delay, and it's a little unlikely that the delay had anything to do with Sahara Hare, but clearly something was going on behind the scenes with the production of this title.

Hopefully collectors who had pre-ordered this Blu-ray still have time to cancel before orders ship out, if they so desire.

Gay Purr-ee Warner Archive Blu-ray Announced

Includes HD debuts of French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back to Me!

Gay Purr-ee Cover And today's Warner Archive news keeps coming, with another major Blu-ray release: the 1962 animated musical Gay Purr-ee! Directed by Warner animator Abe Levitow and starring the voices of Judy Garland and Robert Goulet, the Blu-ray is set for release on August 29.

Historically, as many fans of Warner animation know, this is the project that cost Chuck Jones his decades-long job with the studio. Moonlighting from his directing position in order to co-write the screenplay with his wife, Jones's assumption was that since the film was being produced by the independent UPA studio it wouldn't show up on anyone's radar at Warners. Tragically, Warner Bros. would pick up the movie's distribution rights, and when the front office discovered who had worked on it, they summarily fired Jones for violating his contract with the studio. Timing-wise it didn't make that much of a difference, as Jones would soon find work at MGM and the entire Warner cartoon studio would shut down a year later anyway, but it was still an embarrassing end to a brilliant career.

Among the disc's announced special features are three classic Warner Bros. cartoons: the Oscar-winning For Scent-imental Reasons, Robert McKimson's French Rarebit, and the Pepe le Pew swan song Louvre Come Back to Me! According to the Archive's technical specs, all three cartoons will be in high definition. Though For Scent... had previously been included on the first Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Blu-ray, the other two cartoons will be making their HD debuts on this release.

The Gay Purr-ee Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on August 29, and a price and link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as they become available.

Little Women (1933) Warner Archive Blu-ray Announced

Includes I Like Mountain Music and the remastered, HD debut of The Organ Grinder

Little Women Cover Today has been a big day for classic movie fans, as Warner Archive has announced its August slate of Blu-ray releases. With a wide variety of classics ranging from the first authorized disc release of the public-domain staple Father's Little Dividend to a certain other movie that would definitely interest Warner Bros. animation fans (see above), one highlight among today's announcements is the Oscar-winning 1933 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, starring Katharine Hepburn and directed by George Cukor. Marking the first sound adaptation of the classic novel, the Blu-ray is set for release on August 29.

Among the disc's announced special features are two early Merrie Melodies cartoons, I Like Mountain Music and The Organ Grinder. According to Warner Archive's announcement, both films will be presented in high definition.

(And for fans of classic comedy, another announced bonus will be the Fatty Arbuckle/Shemp Howard short In the Dough. Notably, Arbuckle died the day after completing work on this production.)

Both I Like Mountain Music and The Organ Grinder had been remastered in HD for HBO Max (at press time, neither are currently available on the Max service), and that remaster of Mountain had been previously used as an extra on the Warner Archive Blu-ray release of Ladies They Talk About. Unfortunately, it was also a victim to the rampant Photoshopping that was done to a number of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies opening titles to make them "HD TV safe," artificially and clumsily extending visual information around the actual film's frame.

Photoshopped I Like Mountain Music titles

Although Warner Archive made a concerted effort to fix these errors on the recent Looney Tunes Collector's Choice compilation, it is not yet known if any such fixes would be done for cartoons being used as special features, so you have been warned.

The Organ Grinder, meanwhile, will be making its remastered HD debut on this Blu-ray, having only previously appeared on DVD as an unremastered extra on the James Cagney youth-gangster drama The Mayor of Hell. It is debatable as to whether the cartoon's opening titles have also been tinkered with:

Organ Grinder titles

Though it may appear as if there are some additional graphics on either side of the Merrie Melodies title screen, at least one vintage print DOES have that weird vertical streak on the right going across the monkey's tail; so as much as it may look, that specific element is not the result of any digital tweaking. Unfortunately there are so few versions of this short available to compare.

The Little Women Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on August 29, and a price and link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as they become available.

Thunderbean Animation's Cartoons for Victory! Blu-ray Announced

Includes new HD scans of Any Bonds Today? and the Hook cartoons

Cartoons for Victory DVD Cover

In honor of the Fourth of July, last week Steve Stanchfield took to his weekly column on Cartoon Research to announce an upcoming release from Thunderbean Animation: a long-planned Blu-ray release of the studio's classic Cartoons for Victory! collection. Originally released on DVD back in 2006, this upgraded edition promises "all new high-definition scans" of rarely seen World War II propaganda films produced by both the Allies and the Third Reich. Thunderbean's web site is hoping for the title to come out in October.

Cartoons for Victory! will be a regular retail release (as opposed to Thunderbean's "special" sets), but currently the Thunderbean web site is offering a limited time pre-order deal. Through July 31, one can pre-order the new Blu-ray direct from Thunderbean for $16.95 (plus shipping).

The disc will contain the following shorts....

Bury the Axis (UK, 1943, stop-motion film by Lou Bunin)
Der Schneemann (The Snowman) (Nazi Germany, 1944, Hans Fischerkoesen)
Verwitterte Melodie (Weather-beaten Melody) (Nazi Germany, 1943, Hans Fischerkoesen)
Cap'n Cub (1945, Ted Eshbaugh)
7 Wise Dwarfs (Canada, 1942, Disney)
Tokyo Woes (1945)
The Return of Mr. Hook (1945)
The Good Egg (1945)
Take Heed Mr. Tojo (1943, Lantz)
Vzpoura hracek (Revolt of the Toys) (Czechoslovakia, 1946, Hermina Tyrvola)
Camouflage (1944, First Motion Picture Unit/Frank Thomas)
Hitler and His Peace Pudding/Hitler Dances to Stalin's Tune (UK, 1939, Anson Dyer)
Nimbus libéré (Occupied France, 1944)
Flight Safety: Landing Accidents (1946, UPA)
Flight Safety: After the Cut (1946, UPA)
Flight Safety: Taxiing Collisions (1946 UPA)
Flat Hatting (1946 UPA)
Any Bonds Today? (1942)
Pérák a SS (Springman and the SS, The Chimney Sweep) (Czechoslovakia, 1946, Jiri Trnka)

The highlights for Warner fans are of course the HD scans of Any Bonds Today? and all of the Hook cartoons (including the earlier color entry produced by Walter Lantz), but the diverse number of shorts from both sides of the conflict make this compilation a fascinating watch. Of bizarre note is Nimbus libéré, produced by Nazi Germany to scare citizens in the French state of Vichy of the "dangers" of Allied forces coming to their rescue, with "American" cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Popeye being depicted as pilots bombing the region! The collection would make an excellent companion piece to Thunderbean's Private Snafu Golden Classics Blu-ray.

The Cartoons for Victory! Blu-ray is scheduled to be released in October. Pre-order it now at Thunderbean Animation, with the special pre-order price of $16.95 valid through July 31.

Caged Warner Archive Blu-ray Now Available

Includes Big House Bunny, remaster unconfirmed

Caged Cover For classic movie fans, Warner Archive's June Blu-ray releases are finally finding their way into homes. One highlight is the Oscar-nominated noir thriller Caged (or Caged!, according to the poster) starring Eleanor Parker and Agnes Moorehead. Being the movie that more or less created the exploitation genre of women-in-prison films, the Blu-ray is now available through the Archive's official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

Among the disc's extras is the classic Friz Freleng Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam prison cartoon Big House Bunny. When originally announced late last month, Warner Archive's posted technical specs did not indicate that the short would be presented in high definition (as they usually do if that's the case). But at least one early review has appeared online suggesting that the cartoon is in fact in HD, which is concerning in of itself because the only HD version of the cartoon has been the one prepared in 2020 for HBO Max with both Photoshopped titles and audio problems. We will continue to monitor reviews as they become available.

As we stressed when this title was first announced, do not buy this just for Big House Bunny. You're either getting an SD version or a very problematic HD version. And if it does turn out to be the HBO Max version, we will not be checking it off on our various lists such as our "Bugs Not on Blu-ray" chart seen below and on our Facebook page. The cartoon needs a major fix first.

Bugs not on Blu-ray

But do purchase this if you're interested in the movie itself, as it is a hidden gem in the noir genre--the kind of under-the-radar classic that Warner Archive used to excel at bringing out.

Caged is now available online on Blu-ray only and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Cimarron (1931) Warner Archive Blu-ray Announced

Includes the remastered, HD debuts of Red-Headed Baby and Lady, Play Your Mandolin!

Cimarron Cover Earlier this month, Warner Archive announced their July release slate, with a number of classic melodramas and westerns making their Blu-ray debuts. One particular title that might interest Looney Tunes fans is the HD debut of RKO's groundbreaking 1931 literary adaptation Cimarron starring Richard Dix. Having been the very first western to win a Best Picture Academy Award (a distinction that wouldn't be repeated for another six decades), the Blu-ray is set for release on July 25.

According to Warner Archive's announcement, the disc's three special features will all be short subjects: the MGM short The Devil's Cabaret and two very early Merrie Melodies, Red-Headed Baby and the historic Lady, Play Your Mandolin! The Archive's technical specs indicate that both cartoons will be presented in high definition.

Both cartoons had been remastered for HBO Max (at press time, neither are currently available on the Max service), and it is assumed that those versions will be utilized for the Blu-ray. This will mark the first time either cartoon has been released remastered let alone in HD. Notably, Red-Headed Baby had previously been used as an extra on the Cimarron DVD back in 2006, but instead of the actual original short the disc included the redrawn colorized version Turner Entertainment produced in 1992, only with the color turned off to make it look black and white.

There doesn't appear to be any Photoshopping done to the titles of Red-Headed Baby for HBO Max. However, Lady, Play Your Mandolin! might be a different story. The opening Merrie Melodies title card with Foxy might have been tinkered with since there is more visual information at the end of Foxy's tail, but considering how few quality versions had been made available in the past (the cartoon was never put into any regular television package, to the point where it would later be featured in Cartoon Network's Toonheads: The Lost Cartoons special), an accurate comparison would prove difficult. So be only a little warned.

Cimarron is scheduled to be released on July 25 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Land of the Pharaohs Warner Archive Blu-ray Release Pushed to July 18

Includes the HD debut of Sahara Hare

Land of the Pharaohs Cover With barely two weeks left to go, Warner Archive has temporarily delayed one of its upcoming June releases, the Howard Hawks epic Land of the Pharaohs. Originally intended to come out on June 27, the Blu-ray is now scheduled for release on July 18, with online retail outlets already updating their product pages to reflect this.

As previously reported, among the disc's extras is the classic Friz Freleng Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon Sahara Hare. Having first shown up remastered on the Golden Collection Volume Four DVD set, the cartoon will be making its debut in high definition on this release.

Land of the Pharaohs is now scheduled to be released on July 18 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection DVD Now in Stores

Ten previously released movies squeezed onto four discs

10 Film Collection Cover It's the day that really nobody was waiting for, as Studio Distribution Services has finally released its first "new" Looney Tunes DVD of the year, the tongue-twistingly-titled Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection. Assembling ten Looney Tunes-related movies across five different decades, the DVD set is now available in stores and online.

As we keep bragging about, we first broke the story of this release over on our Facebook page at the beginning of the year (another reason to follow us there if you haven't already). Thankfully, more fan focus and excitement was directed at Warner Archive's Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Blu-ray.

The collection contains the following films squeezed onto four discs....

Friz Freleng's Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie
Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island
Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
Space Jam
Tweety's High-Flying Adventure
Looney Tunes Back in Action
Bah Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas
Rabbits Run
Space Jam: A New Legacy
King Tweety

There is really no reason to purchase this. All of these movies have been made readily available so many times before, with some to the point of oversaturation. We would love, LOVE, to see some of the compilation movies given the special-edition Blu-ray treatment from Warner Archive (particularly something like 1001 Rabbit Tales with its missing sequence), but that doesn't look like it will ever be the case.

If anything notable can be said, apart from holiday and dollar-store repackages of older titles, this is currently the final Looney Tunes home video product on Warner's release calendar...for now. After all, it's only June.

The Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection is now in stores on DVD only and retails for $69.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Collector's Choice Cover Today's the day! After enigmatic leaks, tantalizing plans, and dream-fulfilling tidbits, Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 is now finally a reality. Compiling twenty classic, new-to-the-format shorts, this first-ever Looney Tunes Blu-ray from the Warner Archive is now available through their official shop at Amazon and other online retailers.

The Blu-ray contains the following....

Beanstalk Bunny (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)

His Bitter Half (1950) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)

Greedy for Tweety (1957) (NEW TO DISC!)
Stooge for a Mouse (1950) (NEW TO DISC!)
A Mouse Divided (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)
A Fractured Leghorn (1950) (NEW TO DISC!)
Plop Goes the Weasel! (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)
Tale of Two Mice (1945) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)
The Foxy Duckling (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
Two Gophers from Texas (1948) (NEW TO DISC!)
Doggone Cats (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
What's Brewin', Bruin? (1948) (NEW TO DISC!)
The Bee-Deviled Bruin (1949) (BRAND NEW TO HOME VIDEO!)

All twenty cartoons are brand new to the format, while only four have been previously released on DVD unremastered.

Obviously we have been recommending this title fully, as not only does it fill a lot of essential gaps in fans' collections but also because the Archive's plan is to move forward with future volumes should sales warrant them. This single disc is in large part what George Feltenstein and Jerry Beck have been hoping to do with the Archive division for the past decade, and it has certainly been a long journey from bottom-of-the-barrel Hanna-Barbera to Porky Pig 101 to Popeye to Tex Avery.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 is now available online on Blu-ray only and retails for $21.99. Order it now on Amazon.

Caged Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Includes non-HD Big House Bunny

Caged Cover Little more than a week after being officially announced, all of Warner Archive's June Blu-ray titles are now available for pre-order, with the final straggler being the Oscar-nominated Caged (or Caged!, according to the poster) starring Eleanor Parker and Agnes Moorehead. A revolutionary noir film that in large part helped kick off the genre of movies set entirely inside a women's prison, the Blu-ray is still set for release on June 27.

As previously reported, among the disc's extras is--appropriately--the classic Friz Freleng Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam prison cartoon Big House Bunny. Unfortunately, Warner Archive's posted technical specs are not indicating if the short will be in high definition. Since the cartoon was first released on DVD back on the first Golden Collection in 2003, it was never remastered into HD until 2020 for HBO Max--and the version done for HBO Max is pretty crummy, with both Photoshopped titles and audio problems. So if you're looking to get this Blu-ray just for Big House Bunny, please keep your expectations very low; it's either in SD or it's a very inferior HD master.

Caged is scheduled to be released on June 27 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Land of the Pharaohs Warner Archive Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Including the HD debut of Sahara Hare

Land of the Pharaohs Cover Not even a week after their formal announcement, most of Warner Archive's June Blu-ray titles have now started popping up for pre-order. This includes the Howard Hawks sorta-historical-but-not-really epic Land of the Pharaohs, which is now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon. Starring Jack Hawkins and a very young Joan Collins in one of her first Hollywood movies, the Blu-ray of this CinemaScope-era cult classic is still set for release on June 27.

As previously reported, among the disc's extras is the classic Friz Freleng Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon Sahara Hare. Having last been seen on the Golden Collection Volume Four DVD back in 2006 (apart from various repackages of said set, etc.), the cartoon will be making its debut in high definition on this release.

Land of the Pharaohs is scheduled to be released on June 27 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Classic Bugs/Sam Cartoons Featured as Extras on Warner Archive June Blu-rays

Including the HD debut of Sahara Hare

Land of the Pharaohs Cover

Caged Cover

Earlier this week Warner Archive announced their June slate of Blu-ray titles. Six 1950s Warner Bros. and MGM films are in the lineup, all tried-and-true classics but with arguably the most known being the Spencer Tracy drama The Old Man and the Sea and the musical Dangerous When Wet (featuring Esther Williams swimming with Tom and Jerry). All six Blu-rays are due to come out on June 27.

Apart from Dangerous When Wet, two other announced titles will be of interest to classic cartoon fans, particularly those of Looney Tunes: Howard Hawks's historical epic Land of the Pharaohs and the groundbreaking women's prison drama Caged (or Caged! if you go by the movie poster). Both Blu-rays will feature Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam cartoons as bonuses, with Sahara Hare on Land of the Pharaohs and Big House Bunny on Caged. Both shorts will be making their Blu-ray debuts on these releases.

BUT, at press time, Warner Archive's technical specs are indicating that only Sahara Hare will be presented in high definition. Though an HD master of Big House Bunny was shown on HBO Max, the Archive is not making that distinction. So if you're going to get Caged only for the cartoon, then please wait until better information becomes available.

Land of the Pharaohs and Caged are both scheduled to be released on June 27 on Blu-ray only, and official prices and links to pre-order them on Amazon will be posted here as soon as they appear.

Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection DVD Available for Pre-Order

Ten previously released movies squeezed onto four discs

10 Film Collection Back Cover With all the anticipation and excitement over Warner Archive's Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1, it's very easy to forget that there's another Looney Tunes home video product coming out this spring. Announced back in January, some more details have now been revealed about the Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection DVD set, which is now also up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon. Collecting ten Looney Tunes-related movies, the DVD set is still scheduled to be released on June 6 and is being listed at $69.99.

We first broke the story of this release (and Collector's Choice!) over on our Facebook page, and it seemed for the longest time as if very little hard information was coming out about it. But now the back cover art has also been released, at least revealing that the ten movies will be squeezed onto just four discs. No special features are listed.

The collection contains the following films....

Friz Freleng's Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie
Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island
Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
Space Jam
Tweety's High-Flying Adventure
Looney Tunes Back in Action
Bah Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas
Rabbits Run
Space Jam: A New Legacy
King Tweety

The text on the back cover reads as follows....

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros. with this monumental collection, featuring the iconic Looney Tunes in live-action and animated classics. This four-disc set contains 10 of the funniest and most popular Looney Tunes movies ever released.

Obviously, this is not an essential purchase for any die-hard collector, and most likely any casual fan has already purchased whichever specific movies they wanted piecemeal. But if someone is really desperate to celebrate the Warner Bros. 100th thing and didn't have anything Looney Tunes in their disc collection, here you go. But really, there are other, better releases coming out.

The Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection is scheduled to be released on June 6 on DVD only and will retail for $69.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Cartoon Extras Announced on Warner Archive April Blu-rays

Including home video debut of Dumb Patrol (1931)

Safe in Hell Cover In addition to all of the news and excitement over the Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1, Warner Archive has announced a slate of additional upcoming releases also incorporating Warner Bros. cartoons. Our thanks to Facebook friend Andrew Edwin Bradley for providing some of this info.

All set for release on April 25, five new Blu-rays of classic Warner-owned films will include Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies as special features, and among those are the digital disc debuts of two rarely seen 1930s shorts. The 1932 black-and-white Merrie Melodies entry A Great Big Bunch of You will be included on the William Powell-starring romantic drama One Way Passage, while the 1931 Bosko cartoon Dumb Patrol will be making its authorized home video debut on the simultaneously controversial and revolutionary pre-Code thriller Safe in Hell.

Both cartoons had been remastered for HBO Max (at press time, Dumb Patrol has yet to appear on the service), and it is most likely that those transfers will be used for their respective Blu-rays. BUT, for whatever reason, Warner Archive's technical specs did not indicate whether Dumb Patrol will be in HD as it did stress for A Great Big Bunch..., so be prepared for anything.

The other three Warner Archive Blu-rays all feature Bugs Bunny cartoons among their bonuses, all three of which have been previously released on both DVD and Blu-ray. The Tex Avery classic Tortoise Beats Hare will appear with the Oscar-nominated James Cagney comedy The Strawberry Blonde, Chuck Jones's Bunny Hugged is set to be included with the Ginger Rogers/Ronald Reagan noir thriller Storm Warning, and the "wabbit season" finale of Duck! Rabbit, Duck! will be alongside the Cagney-starring political drama A Lion Is in the Streets. Like with Dumb Patrol, Warner Archive is also not specifying if Bunny Hugged with be in HD.

Safe in Hell is scheduled to be released on April 25 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $19.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

One Way Passage is also scheduled to be released on April 25 on Blu-ray only and will also retail for $19.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

The Strawberry Blonde is also scheduled to be released on April 25 on Blu-ray only and will also retail for $19.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Storm Warning is also also scheduled to be released on April 25 on Blu-ray only and will also retail for $19.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

And finally, A Lion Is in the Streets is also also also scheduled to be released on April 25 on Blu-ray only and will also retail for $19.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Whew!

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 Warner Archive Blu-ray Contents Revealed

16 disc debuts! 1 home video debut!

Collector's Choice Cover And the Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 news is coming fast and furiously! Jerry Beck and Warner Archive today revealed the contents of the upcoming Warner Archive Blu-ray collection, to the almost universal cheers of everyone. Compiling twenty classic, brand-new-to-Blu-ray shorts, the HD disc is still set for release on May 30.

The Blu-ray will contain the following cartoons, listed for now in alphabetical order....

Beanstalk Bunny (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)
The Bee-Deviled Bruin (1949) (BRAND NEW TO HOME VIDEO!)
Catch as Cats Can (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
Cracked Quack (1952) (NEW TO DISC!)
Daffy Doodles (1946) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)
Doggone Cats (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
The Foxy Duckling (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
A Fractured Leghorn (1950) (NEW TO DISC!)
Greedy for Tweety (1957) (NEW TO DISC!)
Hip Hip- Hurry! (1958) (NEW TO DISC!)
His Bitter Half (1950) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)
Hot-Rod and Reel! (1959) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)
Little Orphan Airedale (1947) (NEW TO DISC!)
A Mouse Divided (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)
Plop Goes the Weasel! (1953) (NEW TO DISC!)
Stooge for a Mouse (1950) (NEW TO DISC!)
Tale of Two Mice (1945) (NEWLY REMASTERED!)
Two Gophers from Texas (1948) (NEW TO DISC!)
The Unruly Hare (1945) (NEW TO DISC!)
What's Brewin', Bruin? (1948) (NEW TO DISC!)

All twenty cartoons are brand new to the format, and all twenty have been newly remastered specifically for this release from 4K scans. Only four of the twenty have been previously released on DVD as unremastered, off-the-shelf extras on Warner features.

The tantalizing teaser of five cartoons that had been previously reported was enough for most fans to already make this an essential purchase, but now? The remaining Three Bears cartoons, including one of the arguably funnier entries, one that also has never been put on video before? A Mouse Divided? Greedy for Tweety? A Fractured Leghorn? The last Porky/Charlie cartoon to be put on disc? Two Gophers from Texas?!? ("What a book! Fffffaaaaa!") This is the kind of all-star, classic-era, and most importantly, mainstream-accessible collection that fans had been dreaming of for years.

We have no...ahem, choice but to fully recommend this title to everyone. It's filling in some holes for the die-hard collectors, has almost every major character and director covered, and it only serves to make us excited for what could come in a second volume...SHOULD SALES WARRANT ONE!!!

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 is scheduled to be released on May 30 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $21.99. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Collector's Choice Cover As we get closer and closer to the release of Warner Archive's brand new Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 Blu-ray, everyone is on pins and needles waiting for the next nugget of information. And while a full content list has yet to be revealed, the compilation is now finally up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon. Catch as Cats Can
Tale of Two Mice
Daffy Doodles
His Bitter Half

We can't help but be optimistic for not only this release but for what a continuing series through Warner Archive could contain. We strongly recommend that anyone, ANYONE, who wants to see Looney Tunes releases continue on physical media pre-order this compilation as soon as possible.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 Warner Archive Blu-ray Announced

Includes disc debut of Beanstalk Bunny!

Collector's Choice Cover It's the news that fans of classic animation have been waiting literally years for, the first all new compilation of Looney Tunes shorts on disc! First broke last night by George Feltenstein and Jerry Beck on the Extras podcast and then detailed a little more this morning on Jerry's Animation Scoop, Warner Archive has finally officially announced the long-rumored Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1, a Blu-ray collection combining twenty newly remastered cartoons all making their debut on the format. At press time, the Animation Scoop article could only promise a "late May" release, but the product's page on Amazon is listing a street date of May 30.

Also at press time, there is no word yet if a DVD edition will be made available.

We first caught wind of this title a while back through Studio Distribution Services and posted about it over on our Facebook page with the plea that everyone keep their expectations in check since nobody had any idea what it was (assuming of course you follow us on there for such little treats...why don't you?!?). SDS soon went radio silent about it, even removing the information from their retailer portal. At the very least when asked about it last week on Stu's Show, Jerry confirmed that it was an actual new Looney Tunes product and not just some repackaged older title, but he also suggested that the release wasn't even close to being ready for release yet. Regardless, it does appear as if Warner will be able to honor that original leaked release date!

Five titles have so far been revealed to be included on the release: the "oft-requested" Beanstalk Bunny, Catch as Cats Can, Tale of Two Mice, Daffy Doodles, and His Bitter Half. George and Jerry are promising a "potpourri" compilation featuring a variety of characters, and such other stars as Road Runner, the Three Bears, the Goofy Gophers, and Foghorn Leghorn have been mentioned (and featured on the cover). This first set will concentrate solely on films from the 1940s and 1950s, but Jerry is hoping that this will be "the new beginning of a new series" if sales allow.

Reportedly, every cartoon on this collection will be making its debut on Blu-ray, and at press time the ones that have previously been released on DVD have only been seen as unremastered off-the-shelf bonuses on Warner feature DVDs. These will be all-new restorations and HD transfers, "not the same restorations from HBO-Max and MeTV."

The product description on Amazon reads as follows....

TONS OF HARE-RAISING FUN IN ONE WILD COLLECTION! From deep inside the Warner Bros. vault comes an anthology chock full of animation gold! Restored, remastered and uncut, the shorts in Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Volume 1 have been carefully selected for discerning fans. Enjoy the finest and funniest golden-era cartoons with the brilliance of high-definition audio and video. These treasures feature A-listers like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester the Cat and Porky Pig, just to name a few. Even better, included among these 20 shorts are classics that have never before been released on home video. Whether you grew up with them or you're introducing them to a new generation, these timeless and iconic characters will keep fans of all ages young at heart.

Obviously, we will be recommending this collection, and it will hopefully lead to future editions to fill even more holes in fans' collections. This is in large part what George and Jerry have been trying to get to through Warner Archive, a long journey from Porky Pig 101 to Popeye and Tex Avery.

Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 1 is scheduled to be released on May 30 on Blu-ray only, and a price and link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as they become available.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series Blu-ray Now in Stores

Includes classic 1953 Duck Dodgers short

Duck Dodgers Cover With little else Looney Tunes-related on the immediate horizon, we can take some solace in knowing that there's at least something new debuting on Blu-ray, even if it's courtesy not of Warner Archive but rather of the mainstream Studio Distribution Services label. So if you love Daffy Duck or if you at least enjoy modern Looney TV product, you can now take home Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series on Blu-ray. Collecting all thirty-nine episodes of the Cartoon Network program onto three discs, the Blu-ray is now available in stores and online.

The set's lone special feature is the original, classic Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century Chuck Jones short from 1953. There is still no word yet if the cartoon is the HD transfer from the Platinum Collection series or the old SD version from the Duck Dodgers first-season DVD and elsewhere. With the first Platinum Collection Blu-ray now being out of print, one would hope for the former, but this is Warner.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series is now in stores on Blu-ray only and retails for $54.97. Order it now on Amazon.

Jerry Beck on Stu's Show March 8

Deadline for e-mail questions is March 3

With spring just around the corner--can't you tell by the blizzard conditions in California??--it's time once again on March 8 for the one and only Jerry Beck to return to Stu's Show, the online series hosted by pop culture/television historian Stu Shostak. The show is a video/audio simulcast, so you can either listen or watch it as it premieres. The show will air at 7PM EST and is available as a free stream for those who tune in (afterward, fans can purchase a "rerun" of the episode online). Information on the various ways to access the show can be found on its web site: www.stusshow.com.

According to Stu's site, this time Jerry's interview will make up two unique back-to-back episodes. This first part will have most of the usual features we've come to know and love from Jerry's visits, including the reviews and previews of theatrical animated features and any news in cartoon-related print media and home video he may have.

Like Jerry's last couple of appearances on Stu's Show, this will be a pre-taped episode. Stu will read viewers' e-mail questions to Jerry during the show like always, BUT there is a deadline to get them in by the time the show is taped. According to Stu himself, viewers have until March 3 to e-mail questions to: comments@stusshow.com

As we always stress, remember that Jerry only works as a consultant for Warner Bros. (and other labels) on select projects. He does not have final say on programming, remastering, or release matters; he can only try to comment on situations as best as he can...and even then, he is sometimes contractually required to not say anything about certain upcoming releases. The information he gives is never meant to be inferred as any sort of official statement from a studio and that they can and do change plans on a whim without telling him. Anything Jerry is authorized to reveal will be said during the show, so please do not barrage Stu and Jerry with "When will this cartoon or show come out on DVD?" questions...and that includes pleas for info on certain upcoming titles that we still know only very little about (you know who we're talking to and what we're referring to). IF JERRY KNOWS AND IS ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT, HE WILL!

We will be posting news updates on our Facebook page as the new episode airs. If there is any major DVD or Blu-ray news announced, we will of course report it here after the show.

So stay inside, bundle up, and get ready for Jerry Beck's return to Stu's Show on March 8!

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

Three-disc set in stores March 28!

Duck Dodgers Cover While we're still waiting for updates on some of Studio Distribution Services' other upcoming Looney Tunes-related releases, one title where information is finally coming fast and furious is the Blu-ray of Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series, which is now up for pre-order at the usual online stores such as Amazon. Collecting all thirty-nine episodes of the Cartoon Network program onto three discs, the Blu-ray is still set for release on March 28.

As we've previously reported, the set's lone special feature will be the original 1953 Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century short. It is still not yet known if it will be in HD.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series is scheduled to be released on March 28 on Blu-ray only and will retail for $54.97. Pre-order it now on Amazon.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series Back Cover Revealed

Confirms original 1953 short as a bonus

Duck Dodgers Back Cover While those looking forward to the upcoming release of Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series on Blu-ray are still waiting for a pre-order to become available online, there is at least some small bit of news as Studio Distribution Services has revealed the title's back cover art. The three-disc set is still scheduled to be released on March 28.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the back cover has revealed the set's lone extra, the original Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century theatrical short. It is not known, however, if the cartoon will be in high definition, as the back cover specs only offer the vague "may not be" disclaimer that is standard for most Blu-ray releases' special features. Considering the short's only HD release, the first Platinum Collection, is currently out of print, it would have been nice if they had made it clear.

The back cover text reads as follows....

It's all systems go for Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series - now on Blu-ray for the first time in stellar hi-def! Join the spaced-out duck and the Eager Young Space Cadet (Porky Pig) for nonstop fun in the 24 1/2th century. Featuring clashes with his Martian nemesis, Commander X-2 (Marvin the Martian), and parodies of some of sci-fi's all-time favorites, all 39 out-of-this-world episodes are ready for launch. Three, two, one...we have ignition for fun!

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series is scheduled to be released on March 28 on Blu-ray only, and a link to pre-order it on Amazon will be posted here as soon as it appears. The Blu-ray will retail for $54.97.

Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection DVD Announced

All repeats, hardly complete collection

10 Film Collection Cover Continuing with recent home video announcements, there will be a "new" Looney Tunes title more directly tied into the Warner Bros. one hundredth anniversary celebration. Part of an ongoing series of multi-film bundles, Studio Distribution Services has announced the release of the wordily titled Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection. Collecting ten Looney Tunes-related movies across five different decades, the DVD set will be released on June 6.

We first broke the story of this release over on our Facebook page (another reason to follow us there if you haven't already), but we wanted to wait until some clearer information was available before posting it here.

The collection contains the following films....

Friz Freleng's Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie
Daffy Duck's Movie: Fantastic Island
Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
Space Jam
Tweety's High-Flying Adventure
Looney Tunes Back in Action
Bah Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas
Rabbits Run
Space Jam: A New Legacy
King Tweety

So right off the bat, it's clear two major omissions are The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie and 1001 Rabbit Tales, to say nothing of some of the more-peripheral productions like the also theatrically released compilation documentary Bugs Bunny Superstar or even random things like Chuck Amuck: The Movie or Baby Looney Tunes' Eggs-traordinary Adventure. So this set is a somewhat mixed bag, offering stuff that had just come out like King Tweety alongside things like the (by our count) sixth reappearance of The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie.

At press time, little else is known about this collection. Studio Distribution Services has not revealed a retail price or even how many discs this set will contain; so we don't know if each movie will have its own disc or if numerous iso files will be squeezed onto one disc. And there is certainly not yet any indication whether any of the special features from the movies' individual releases will also carry over onto this set.

The only thing we can currently speculate on is the price point. A similar ten-film collection themed around Scooby-Doo will be released in April retailing for $54.99, so figure this set's price will likely be comparable to that.

But obviously, if you've been a die-hard completist at this point then there is nothing new being offered on this collection. This is meant for impulse purchases at Walmart and Barnes and Noble and the like.

The Best of WB 100: Looney Tunes 10-Film Collection DVD is scheduled to be released on June 6, and a price and link to pre-order it will be posted here as soon as they become available.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series Blu-ray Announced

Three-disc set in stores March 28!

Duck Dodgers Cover With Warner Bros. set to celebrate its one hundredth anniversary throughout 2023, Studio Distribution Services has spent January offering a flurry of Warner-related new releases to retail for the first half of the year, and surprisingly a number of Looney Tunes titles are in the mix. One such release is the first dedicated Looney Tunes Blu-ray since 2020's Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection, Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series. Collecting all thirty-nine episodes of the Cartoon Network program onto three discs, the Blu-ray will be released on March 28.

The set will be made available to general retail. This is somewhat noteworthy because the DVD of the series's third season was only handled through Warner Archive and released online through its various outlets. And of course, the entire series has already been made available digitally everywhere.

At press time, it is not known if any special features will be included, such as the classic Duck Dodgers short or any of the related sequels.

Duck Dodgers: The Complete Series is scheduled to be released on March 28 on Blu-ray only, and a link to pre-order it on Amazon will be posted here as soon as it appears. The Blu-ray will retail for $54.97.
