The first known Canadian Warner Bros. compilations are from 1981, becoming the first ever North American Looney Tunes cassettes by predating the Looney Tunes Video Show series by a year. But alas, they were only available dubbed in French.
At the moment it is not known how many titles were made in this assortment or how long they were in print. Perhaps not coincidentally, very similar collections were also made available at this time in France. In a "chicken or the egg" scenario, it is unknown whether the French releases came first and were merely ported over to Canada or vice versa.
Tweety and Sylvester Volume 1
1981 (right image is from a 1994 reissue)
Tweety and the Beanstalk - Tom Tom Tomcat - Tugboat Granny
The Jet Cage - Tree Cornered Tweety - Tweet and Lovely
Tweety's S.O.S. - Tweet Zoo

Speedy Gonzales: La Petite Souris la Plus Rapide du Monde
1981
Mexican Boarders - The Pied Piper of Guadalupe - Tabasco Road
Mexican Cat Dance - Go Go Amigo - Cat-Tails for Two
Here Today, Gone Tamale - Mexicali Shmoes - Road to Andalay
Awkward freeze frame of Speedy aside, it's odd to see Mel Blanc and Gonzales Gonzales credited on the cover for doing voices considering all of their work was dubbed over on this release. And in addition to the random name misspelling here and there, why is Tedd Pierce credited as an animator?
Titi - Grosminet - Speedy Gonzales - Bugs Bunny et Leurs Amis
1981 (right image is from a circa 1990 reissue)
Trick or Tweet - Tweet and Sour - Tortilla Flaps
Mucho Locos - Snow Business - Captain Hareblower
Birds of a Father - Speedy Ghost to Town
Hey look! Everyone's favorite characters are featured on this haphazard cover like Bugs, Tweety, Speedy, Sylvester, and...um, the creepy lecher from A Bird in a Bonnet (a cartoon that's not even included on this tape!).

The Looney Tunes Video Show
(English)
Of course, Canada saw the release of the same first three volumes of The Looney Tunes Video Show as the United States, but Warner's Canadian division continued the line long after it was prematurely abandoned stateside.
It has always been believed that volumes four through seven saw a Canadian release, but the only evidence of the expanded line is below....
The Looney Tunes Video Show #4
1988
Ain't She Tweet - The Astroduck - Backwoods Bunny
Heaven Scent - Pests for Guests - Lighthouse Mouse
Don't Give Up the Sheep
This is perhaps the most widely known "rare" North American Looney Tunes video cassette, not to mention also the catalyst for the hope that the entire seven-volume series was issued in Canada.
When Warner Home Video reissued the Looney Tunes Video Show cassettes in 1989, an effort was apparently being made to consolidate the U.S. and Canadian catalogs. While the first three volumes stayed in print for another decade, volume four here was lost in the shuffle before becoming a sought-after collector's item.
Bugs Bunny & Pals: The Looney Tunes Video Show
(The Looney Tunes Video Show #5)
1986
Tugboat Granny - Stork Naked - Fastest with the Mostest
Forward March Hare - Feather Dusted - China Jones
Odor of the Day
This is actually a U.S. release, lumped here only because of its rarity and similar mysterious fate as the above Canadian video.
Retitled Bugs Bunny & Pals: The Looney Tunes Video Show, this version of volume five was made available from July 1986 until January 1987 as a mail-in offer from Borden's Bugs Bunny & Pals drink mix line. Despite the new moniker to tie into the promotion, the video still retained its original title on the cassette label and even its Looney Tunes Video Show #5 video intro.
All one had to do was send proof-of-purchase UPCs from any two Bugs Bunny & Pals boxes along with $9.95...plus yet another dollar for shipping and handling. The advertising for the offer (above) didn't bother trying to entice collectors by saying it was an exclusive release. But at least in another bit of cross-promotion, it did make a point to mention The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show on ABC.
Fortunately, unlike with volume four, every cartoon on this video has since been released on subsequent U.S. collections. |
The Looney Tunes Video Show
(The Looney Tunes Spectacle Vidéo)
Much like how the Looney Tunes Video Show series continued in other countries with further volumes, Canada's French-dubbed collections went far beyond their U.S. English counterparts.
Interestingly, the French editions weren't merely dubbed versions of the American volumes but rather uniquely compiled collections, offering different lineups from even what was sold throughout most of Europe. The French collections were released in tandem in both Canada and France, although for whatever reason sometimes the order of cartoons differed on certain releases.
Beginning in 1989 Warner Home Video started reissuing the French-Canadian volumes in packaging similar to its U.S. Looney Tunes Video Show re-releases. To differentiate the French videos from the similar-looking English reissues, the entire series was given a new, more-French-sounding moniker: The Looney Tunes Spectacle Vidéo. As of this update, only the first seven volumes have been known to be reissued like this, and those new covers are shown at the right.
